Wholetime Fire Stations can comprise of wholetime and retained
firefighters. Wholetime firefighters follow a basic shift pattern
of four consecutive shifts; 2 day shifts (9am-6pm), 2 night shifts
(6pm-9am). This shift pattern is then repeated within an 8 day cycle.
Wholetime Fire Stations tend only to exist in densely populated
areas, where there is the highest risk of fire.
Day Crewed Fire Stations can also comprise of wholetime
and retained firefighters. Day Crewed Stations, as the name suggests,
only receive wholetime crewing levels during the day. Throughout
the night, fire cover is provided on a retained basis. Firefighters
work for 3 consecutive day shifts, followed by 3 days off. This
cover continues over the weekend.
Nucleus Fire Stations comprises of a core of wholetime firefighters
that work day shifts (9am-5pm), then fire cover is provided on a
retained basis during the night and at weekends. The main difference
between Nucleus and Day Crewed Stations is that Nucleus work a regular
working week, 9am-5pm (Monday to Friday).
