Pay - The current rates of pay are good and the scales are
set out in detail below. If you are off work through illness or
accident you are entitled to full pay for 6 months and this may
continue for 12 months or longer if there is a good chance that
you will eventually be able to return to work.

Assistant Chief Officer/Deputy Chief Officer/Chief Officer receive
varying rates of pay
Overtime - Overtime is paid whenever a member is detailed
to a fire beyond normal duty hours and enhanced rates are paid for
duty on public holidays.
Leave - A firefighter is entitled to annual leave plus 10
days public holiday leave and extra leave after five years' service.
Pensions - A member of the FRS who retires at 50 after
at least 25 years' service receives a pension for the rest of his/her
life. The maximum pension paid after 30 years' service is two-thirds
of the highest salary of his/her last three years of service. Every
member contributes 11% of salary towards a pension throughout his/her
service. If retirement is caused through ill-health, a pension is
paid based on length of service. If retirement is caused through
injury sustained in the course of duty the pension is based on length
of service and extent of disablement. A reduced pension is payable
to the widow of a Fire & Rescue Service pensioner.
Meals on Duty - Meals on duty can be provided in the Station
Mess that is run by a Mess Manager appointed from among the staff.
Cooking facilities, utensils and crockery are provided and members
only pay for the cost of the food.
Uniforms - 'Undress' uniform for normal wear on duty, firefighting
uniforms, shoes, boots and personal equipment are all provided free.
Repairs and replacements are also free. There is an annual issue
of shirts, socks and ties.
Trade Union Membership - Members of the FRS are represented
locally and nationally by the Fire & Rescue Services' Union, Fire Officers Association and the Retained Firefighters Union.
Welfare - Every officer is keenly interested in the day-to-day
welfare of his/her personnel and is there to solve problems, or
give advice as and when required. The FRS runs a Recreation
and Welfare Fund that finances its members' activities in these
important fields. The FRS encourages involvement in all the
work of the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund which looks after
all firefighters and ex-firefighters during illness or hardship.
Recruit Basic Training Courses - If your application is
successful you will be required to undertake a 3 month training
course.
Promotion Prospects - All new Firefighter recruits start
their careers as firefighters irrespective of age or academic qualification.
Probation Period - Following their appointment all firefighters
are put on a development programme during which time
their progress is carefully monitored to ensure that they are reaching
the high standards set by the FRS.
Postings - All firefighters must undertake to serve anywhere
in the Wiltshire County Fire & Rescue Service area and although every effort
is made to ensure that a member serves at the station of his/her
choice, this cannot be guaranteed.
Courses - All firefighters and officers are now part of
a structured system of progressive learning and undertake to attend
residential courses and seminars at the direction of the Chief Fire Officer.
