GET OUT, GET THE FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE OUT... STAY OUT!
Few things are more frightening than a fire in your home. One day it COULD happen to you.

If there is a fire in your home, it will be much easier for you to escape if you have already thought about the best way out.

Why not talk about your escape route with Mum, Dad or another adult where you live? And draw an escape plan.

PLAN YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE

Make sure you have worked out your escape route in advance.

Once you have worked out your escape route, make sure you always keep it clear of toys and other things that could block your way out.

Make sure others are aware of the escape route, by putting your Fire Plan somewhere visible.

Suppose a fire has started in your home and you discover it. What do you do?

1. Raise the alarm. Tell an adult.

2. Get out. Get others out, too, if you can. Remember, don't risk your own life.

3. Get the FRS out. Go to the nearest telephone outside your house, dial 999 and ask for the Fire & Rescue Service. (The nearest telephone might be a neighbour's, or it could be a phone box.)

4. Stay out. NEVER go back in for anything. Your life is much more precious than your toys, or even your pets.

IF YOUR CLOTHES CATCH FIRE...

1. Stop. Don't run, as this will make the fire worse.

2. Drop. Get down onto the floor.

3. Roll over, as this will put the flames out. Keep on rolling until it does.

It's far better, of course, to stop fires starting at all. Here are a few fire prevention tips:

Don't play with matches.

Don't stand or play to close to fires or heaters.

Don't leave toys or clothes on, or too close to, fires and heaters.

Unplug anything electrical that you have been using. Not every appliance is designed to be switched on all the time. Play it safe: unplug it.

A BEDTIME ROUTINE

Ask yourself:

• Is my escape route clear?

Have I switched everything off?
